The Deep Heart's Core: A Contemplative Retreat with Literature

The Rt. Rev. Henry Nutt Parsley, Jr. is the retired 10th Bishop of the Diocese of Alabama and was the 22nd Chancellor of the University of the South. Bishop Parsley has offered leadership for the Church as a person of deep spiritual insight, discerning intellect and a gifted teacher. Since 2000, Bishop Parsley's retreats frequently utilize his interest and passion for literature as a resource for the spiritual journey.

The Deep Heart's Core: A Contemplative Retreat with Literature

The title of this retreat is drawn from W.B. Yeats’ poem “The Lake Isle of Innisfree,” where the poet writes of hearing echoes of this favorite place in his “deep heart’s core.” For those who plan to attend, I ask that you do a little preliminary reading: the short novel Hannah Coulter by Wendell Berry [Counterpoint: 2004], the short story "A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor [not for the faint of heart!], the poem Four Quartets, especially quartet III “The Dry Salvages,” on which we will focus our attention, and “Ash Wednesday by T.S. Eliot. Please bring a copy of these with you. Additionally I will provide a number of poems by Mary Oliver, Wendell Berry, Elizabeth Bishop, e.e. cummings, Edwin Muir and others [no preliminary reading required]. We will engage in contemplative reflection and conversation with these works of literature, seeking through them to listen for God and deepen the life of our souls. The retreat is designed for anyone -not just English majors! It should be fun- and hopefully meaningful.
